A CRICKET SPORTS REPORT by
Warren O' Rourke 1937 : Headmaster Hessing carried off to hospital on a stretcher after being struck on the head while keeping wicket. Silence of concern among players and spectators. A master named Hadlee, I think, an ex-North Pointer, in the school for only a short time, demonstrates footwork as it ought to be done at batting. 1938 : Carl Bloud driving Rudra of St. Paul's off the front foot after indicating where he wanted the ball to pitch. North Point on our flat : Pointer Alex Garbis's square cuts clatter hard against the palings. He gets a good score and one of his team goes better - Jones, I think - by scoring a century. "Cunney" Franks hits a century in a pick-up match, and he still in Standard 8. 1939 - 40 : Dick Smart knocks a bail to the long north boundary. He is the school fast bowler. Mick Blake consistently gets runs. Jock Hill, (There are other mentions of Jock Hill, throughout this web site - Editor), a master, coming in late in the battiing order against a visiting team, hits one ball after another over the cryptomarias which Cricket, the groundsman somehow finds among the treea and bushes and the thick carpet of leaves on the khud beyond the west pavilion. David Greenhorn hones his skills at suicide point. Norman Smith is the school all rounder, taking wickets and getting runs. Smithy is my choice for the school's outstanding cricketer. The Planters' team has a right arm leg break bowler who bowls some of our boys round their legs. After 1940 : Zareh Carapiet (Puss Puss), gets some big scores in house and inter-school matches. He goes on to play for a representative team agains a touring West Inidan side. Rumours of Pronab Roy's prowess reaches me though articles written be old boys. I heard he played for Bengal. Mick Blake does well as a batsman at St. Xavier's Colege, Calcatta. I watch him hit an effortless six into Short Street - all in the timing and the body balance.
