My Good Days at Victoria School

Our Late Headmaster Mr. C. A. Bloud took my interview in December, 1954 at Calcutta and the only question he asked me-"Do you play Cricket ?" I answered, 'Yes." "Then name me any test player" l said, "Mr. G. S. Ramchand" and I was selected for admission. Those were the days how the students were selected. Then he asked my father, whether train batch or air batch. My father said, "air batch." Some day in March, 1955 I came all the way from Chandannagar to catch the flight from Dum Dum Airport. I was so thrilled travelling for the first time and when we landed at Bagdogra we started searching as to who had come to receive us. Suddenly one Mr. John asked if I was to go to Victoria School, I said yes, and he replied that he was searching for me.

There were four senior students viz. M/s. R. Blacke, E. Ball, R. Rhodes & N. Clarke with me and all along the 2 1/2 hours of journey to Kurseong they were giving me a vivid description of the school and its surroundings. Mr. R. Blake, a Senior Cambridge student and captain of school Cricket, Football and Hockey teams, became very 'pally' with me and liked me a lot from his heart. When we reached school, to my utter disappointment I realised that my trunk was missing, it was finally traced after about 4 days.

I loved my school very much due to such good students, teachers, food, playgrounds and the atmosphere and climate etc. etc. and soon got used to the routine. Our Annual Sports could be compared to any big sporting event in the world and in those days it lasted for 3 days consecutively.

Our games teacher, Mr. S. K. Chatterjee had joined the school in 1955. He was a six foot person and with good built and physique. In cricket, we were the district champions, the standard could be compared with any county cricket of England.

I really feel proud to be one of the student of Victoria School and sincerely hope with the guidance of the present Headmaster, the school will definitely come UP More and more. God bless our school and all her old pupils.
