It was way back in 1956 I was studying in J.C. (Junior ‘Cambridge) Supratim Ghosh, nicknamed "Geronimo", did everything but study. His principal hobby was to collect pin-ups of Hollywood filmstars and stick, them on the inside cover of his desk. He admired stars like Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe whenever the teacher was not looking. And when he thought he was alone, he would mumble sweet nothings, as if engaging. them in conversation.

At that time ‘Choach’ (Mr. C.A. Bloud) was our Headmaster as well as our English Teacher. One day, Choach came to our class for his usual period of English. At that time, Gerohimo was busy admiring the pin-ups in his desk. Of course this didn’t escape the notice of ‘Choach’ but our good old friend was oblivious to everyone and everything except his "little lovelies".

‘Choach’ sat in the teacher’s chair and asked us to take out our book. "Rodney Stone". As soon as we took out the book, he asked Geronimo a question from Rodney Stone.

To our utter surprise, he answered the question correctly.

‘Choach’ was both surprised and excited. He said: "By Jove, Ghosh it seems that the figures in your desk have given you tremendous inspiration. You’ve actually answered correctly" He paused, and then said, "Anyway, keep it up. In fact, stick more pin-ups so that you get through your Senior Cambridge Examinations. Who knows, these pin-ups may actually help you in S.C."

I still haven’t asked Geronimo whether he had increased his pin-up collection and how far they had helped him in his exams.
